What are some places to visit in Washington, DC, that aren't too hokey nor too hip?

I'm a faculty adviser and taking some college kids to DC next week. We may have a couple of nights in town. The students are limited as to how much they could spend on meals, but I believe they are of legal drinking age. I don't want to take them someplace too dull, nor someplace too "cool." We're also on an academic trip, so I don't also want to take them somewhere too heady as this will be down time.

Last year, I took the students to Baltimore but one place we hit was way too risque, and the neighborhood was a bit dangerous for the students I was with. I'd rather not repeat that.

I'll be at the Renaissance Hotel. Know any afforable, but decent, restaurants nearby? Comedy clubs? Other ideas? What are some places to visit in Washington, DC, that aren't too hokey nor too hip?
One of my personal favorites:

http://www.capcitybrew.com/

It's a microbrew with a lot of beer choices. They just updated their menu, lots of choices. Somewhat un-accommodating for parties much over 8.

On New York Ave, around 11th st. Your hotel is about 2-3 blocks away. Its in the "Old Greyhound" building. A beautiful Art-Deco style building which is completely restored.

It's in a good part of town. Stay away from the parks at night to avoid the freaky people, and stay south of your hotel (Street letters going toward "A"). Much above L can get a little hairy.

Comedy Club: dcimprov.com 1140 Connecticut Ave. From your hotel work your way to 11th and K street and get on the big red circulator bus towards Georgetown (bus costs $1). Take that to around 18th st. connecticut avenue is near there too. walk "uptown" on Connecticut, it's on the left. Take the big red bus back towards union station to return to your hotel. Ask your hotel concierge more about the circulator... it's a great way to get around town.
