Make no mistake, the Florida Keys are unique %26amp; have a lifestyle like no other place..but... Its an expensive place to live, housing is very limited, hurricanes are always a risk %26amp; insurance, food %26amp; gas are the highest in Florida. Jobs are available in bars %26amp; restaurants because few can afford to live there on what they pay or afford the commute in from Miami. Many workers are bussed in from Homestead rather than make the long drive down. Remember there is only 1 road that goes in %26amp; out of the keys. Most people only visit, few stay for the long term. Be sure you have a place to live before making any long term plans.Is Key West OK to live?
Key West is one of a kind. It's a great place to live and work if you are in the hospitality business. It's not a cheap place to live, however.

As far as hurricanes, you do have warning and can run for cover if necessary.
